How To Stay Organized In College? – 19+ Essential Tips

Decorating your room is an important aspect of dorm life, but then how to maintain the cute kawaii vibe is as important if not more.

This blog is all about tips for staying organized in your dorm room. To start with, your dorm room really does not need all those stuff ==> check out this list for the college packing ESSENTIALS.

Keep your room clean.

One big aspect of being organized is making sure that your room is clean. If your room isn’t clean it’s really difficult to be organized or look cute/aesthetic. So take some time every week to clean, declutter, and organize your room. Throw away things that don’t belong and put everything in its place.

Put away your clothes immediately.

After you do laundry, put away your clothes. Don’t leave them in the dryer. Don’t leave them in the laundry basket. Don’t dump them on the couch and leave them. Fold them and put them away. You will be surprised at much organized your room looks and how much time you will save in the long run. Just get it done now.

Make sure to also organize your clothes & stuff by season, for example, what your room needs for spring will be very different from your fall essential list.

Have a place for everything.

Put your dirty clothes in a basket. Have a tray for your keys, wallet, etc. Have space on your counter or sink for your toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. Organize your counters and drawers. Make sure everything has a place. This way you know where everything goes and if it does not have a place, you know you probably don’t need it and can get rid of it. It is also important to declutter and keep only the essential stuff for your college life.

I find that it is super important and helpful to have a place for everything. It keeps me from having to rearrange things constantly and never knowing where things will go. It also makes the clean-up process a lot easier and faster so I can spend that time doing other things. I really recommend that you have a place for all of your things so you know exactly where they are.

Put everything back into its place.

Now that everything has a place, it is important that everything you get out goes back to its place. It is essential to stay organized and make sure that things don’t get cluttered and you always have a nice, cute, clean-looking desk and dorm room without having to do a lot of cleaning once a week. A few minutes of putting something back in its place will help you down the line. To organize your small items better, don’t forget to check out our guide!!

Organize your computer.

If you are in college, you probably have a lot of things going on on your computer. So it’s important to keep it organized so you can find and access the things you need. File your photos, documents, and more. Create separate folders for everything you need. Make sure that you are keeping up with everything so it doesn’t get overwhelming.

Check your emails.

It’s important to check your school email if you want to be organized. You don’t want to miss out on something or forget about something because you didn’t check your email. Look at your email at least once a week and write down important dates and things that you need to remember.

Take care of yourself.

If you aren’t feeling well or aren’t feeling up to speed, it’s difficult to stay organized. When we aren’t feeling well, organizing is sometimes the first thing to go. We just lay around and don’t worry about it. So if you want to stay organized, take care of yourself and make sure you are feeling your best as much as you can.

Make your bed every day.

This may not seem like an organizational task, but it actually is. If your bed is not made, your room won’t look as put together. Your bed is a statement and if it’s not made, your room won’t look as organized. Also, if you don’t make your bed, you won’t be completing that first task of the day that helps you feel like you have accomplished something and inspire you to keep going.

Clean the counter after each use.

Whether it’s your bathroom counter, your kitchen counter, or your dresser, if you use it, clean up immediately. This will keep things looking fresh and tidy all day. You will reduce clutter and notice that your space looks nicer more often than not. Wipe off the counter when you can. Not only will it look clean but it also gets rid of dust and germs.

Throw away papers and receipts you don’t need.

Because all of those papers that you have in your workspace are getting in the way of actually working.

There is some stuff that you need to hold on to, but I am sure there are things you hold on to that you don’t really need. And then you end up losing all the things you do need. So do a major purge of papers and receipts that you don’t actually need. This will give you more space, less clutter, and a much more organized system. Go through everything and make sure you are only keeping the things you really need.

Relocate things that don’t belong.

I don’t know about you, but I am the kind of person that piles my desk with cute kawaii things that don’t really belong there. Because my desk is such a central part of my room, I put things there when I need to remember where it is. But I have found that this really just clutters my desk so I found that making sure that things that do not belong there don’t end up finding a permanent home there. If there are things in your workspace that don’t belong, find a more permanent place for those items to maximize your workspace.

Give away any extra supplies.

I am a collector of pens, but I know that I don’t need one hundred pens on my desk. So I store them somewhere else and only keep a few pens on my desk. I also don’t keep my tape, stapler, and other things that I don’t use a ton on my desk. They take up unnecessary space and are better kept somewhere else. If you store away any extra supplies, you will have more workspace and have more opportunities to use the space to your advantage.

Remove unnecessary organization.

I am a huge advocate for the organization and anything that helps you organize. However, if you have an organization that you don’t really need and all it does is hold junk and take up space, I say remove it. It just makes it easier to keep things you don’t need and it takes up space that can be used to actually get things done. So if you have any organizational items that you aren’t sure of their purpose, toss them or give them to someone who can actually use it.

Get rid of the clutter.

Decorating your room is different from cluttering your room.

My desk gets cluttered so much and I know I have to clean it off often. Getting rid of clutter makes most of the difference when it comes to maximizing my workspace and taking advantage of what I have. I usually have pretty limited space, so I don’t want to waste it by holding clutter. Clutter is such a waste, so I know I need to either throw it away or find a more permanent place for it that is not on my desk. It gives me more space to work with and honestly just makes me feel better.

Organize your desk.

Keeping your kawaii desk organized will help your room look more put together and limit clutter. It gives you a nice workspace and assures you that you can find everything you need. Having a cluttered desk is uninviting and distracting, so having an organized desk will keep a cleanroom.

Declutter regularly.

If you are anything like me you probably accumulate stuff all the time. So I find that it is extremely important to go through all of my stuff at least every couple of months so I can get rid of the things that I no longer need or want to hold on to. It frees up a ton of space and helps things look a lot more clean and tidy. So I recommend finding the time to declutter as regularly as possible.

Leave some room.

I don’t know what it is, but I find that I feel the need to fill every inch of space, especially the walls. I don’t like having shelf space that doesn’t have anything on it. But I have come to realize that trying to cover every inch of space is what makes the most clutter. So when it comes to organizing and staying organized for that matter, resist the urge to cover and fill every space that you have and leave yourself some breathing room.

Use a planner.

Even though I am out of college now, I still find myself using my kawaii planner. I use it to keep up with blog posts, social media planning, keeping track of important dates and events, and so much more. So I highly recommend picking up a planner that you love and know you will use because this will help keep you a lot more organized and keep you from planning too much.

Create a schedule.

I find that having a cleaning and organizing schedule works really well for me. That way I am not trying to do everything I need to do in one day. I set my home office/work corner on specific areas on specific days. It helps me stay on top of things so I’m not getting tired halfway through and just giving up. I highly recommend figuring out what kind of schedule works for you and making it a regular part of your weekly routine.

I use Google Calendar for this. It helps me schedule my day by time so I know what I will be doing and when I will be doing it. It keeps me productive and helps me hold myself accountable for getting things done. If it is on the schedule I know it is a priority so I keep moving throughout my day according to what is on the calendar.
