Why Kawaii?

Kawaii means cuteness, innocence & being harmless in Japan. Being cute is NOT the same as being kawaii. While both cute and kawaii decoration styles are feminine and soft, kawaii style is more associated with a Tokyo Harajuku girl aesthetic and anime culture. It is a Japanese cuteness (think Sailor Moon, Sanrio, Hello Kitty, etc.) instead of a Disney or Pixar princess cuteness (think Cinderella or Frozen).

The origin of the kawaii culture is for Japanese adults to have a moment of escape from stressful everyday life. But isn’t the positive energy provided by the kawaii culture what we all need in a modern competitive lifestyle?

Who Am I?

Past: I was trained as an architect, today I still spend a significant amount of time designing the interior and exterior of buildings. I also grew up with the kawaii culture. My mum is a Japanese manga translator, reading manga she translated and hanging out with her Japanese manga artist friends is a large part of my childhood memory. Until April I am 30+ years old, and I have determined that I will never “grow up”. This website is where I continue to pursue my desire for the cute and kawaii culture under my black formal meeting suit.
Current & future: I am in the process of moving country. I plan to have a craft room and develop some patterns for kawaii DIY projects to share with like-minded people when I and my husband settles down. The pandemic, political unease, interrupted global supply chain, etc made me rethink my spending habits A LOT. I did not buy any new clothes during the years of pandemics, and I really want to shift more towards DIY and upcycling. I was always surrounded by creative people with strong handicraft abilities because of my profession, and interest in cosplay subcultures. Moving forward living in a sustainable and ethical way is going to be the priority of my lifestyle.
